A thick and creamy low sugar treat filled with protein and healthy fats to satisfy your hunger and all chocolate cravings!
I know what you’re thinking… a vegetable filled smoothie? I promise it does not taste like a salad in a cup. While this isn’t your typical chocolate shake, it’s a fun rendition that still tastes delicious and is loaded with so many incredible vitamins and nutrients.
It’s no secret I’m obsessed with smoothies. Especially during the summer, I have one pretty much every day, so I love experimenting with the ingredients so I never get bored! This is also better for digestion, even too much of one fruit or vegetable is not ideal, and it keeps the smoothies from tasting repetitive.
In my experimentation, I decided to incorporate more veggies in my smoothies to replace bananas and berries, my usual smoothie go-to’s. While I love fruit and eat it frequently, when making smoothies it’s easy to throw a bunch of ingredients in a blender and end up with a drink with more sugar than a chocolate bar. Of course natural sugars are better than refined sugars, but sugar in any form can be addictive, and will spike the glucose levels in your bloodstream, which eventually leads to a crash. For this reason, it’s important to eat sugary fruits with protein and healthy fats to slow the digestion to prevent your blood sugar from spiking too much, which would leave you feeling unenergized and hungry.

The key to the creamy consistency of this smoothie is steaming, then freezing the veggies. Not only does this make this smoothie easier to digest, but it helps to create a thick, smooth consistency without any fruit. The avocado, sweet potato, and cauliflower together create the best, almost pudding-like texture that is so luscious. Make sure to steam chopped sweet potato and cauliflower florets ahead of time until tender, then freeze them overnight in a freezer friendly container. I do this in batches on the weekend to last me for several days.
I tend to like everything on the less sweet side–for me, the darker the chocolate, the better! I love this shake because it’s not too sweet, but if you like things a little sweeter, you could add half a banana or a date, either of which would be delicious! What really sweetens the original recipe is the protein powder, so it’s important to find one with good ingredients that you like! I love the Vega Choc-O-Lat Protein Smoothie powder, but feel free to use whatever your favorite chocolate protein powder is.
This smoothie is incredibly nutrient dense, so it’s perfect to fuel you in the morning, or as a pre or post workout meal. It’s high in protein from the protein powder, filled with healthy fats from avocado and almond butter, and has tons of fiber from the veggies!

- ½ cup steamed and frozen sweet potato
- 1 cup steamed and frozen cauliflower
- ¼ avocado
- 1 serving chocolate protein powder
- 2 tbsp cacao powder
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup nut milk*
- 1 tbsp cacao nibs
- optional: handful of greens
- Place all the ingredients in a high speed blender and blend until smooth and creamy. The mixture will be very thick so you will probably need to stop and scrape the sides a few times. Add more nut milk to help blend if necessary!
